3 Things to do this summer

Three things students should do this summer:

Del Mar Fair: Go to one of the most visited fairs in San Diego from June 3rd– July 4th. At the Del Mar Fair students can enjoy their favorite fried foods. Students can go on many rides and spend memorable times with families and friends. Students should take advantage of the opportunities to socialize and experience the San Diego culture, and check out the artist that are coming to perform.

Go to the beach: If students feel the hot summer heat hitting their skin, all they care about is going somewhere refreshing and nice. Well, then go to the beach! San Diego is known for its beaches. Students can go to La Jolla or Pacific Beach and explore our beautiful beaches spending quality time with their family and friends. Students can swim, build sand castles, take pictures, or eat ice cream. Students can also make a bonfire and eat s’mores making summer memorable.

Padres Game: Everyone has there eye on the ball. All of a sudden there is a BOOM! The game has started. The Padres have plenty of summer games coming up.Students can go to Downtown San Diego with a group of friends and enjoy the game. Make sure to check out there schedules, and what theme they may have that day. Students can buy their tickets online or at the stadium, and maybe win a free t-shirt.

Boy Athlete of the Year

Sports are a big thing all around the world for all types of people. It does not matter what age you are, if you’re a female, or if you’re a male.

At Kearny High School, one of our student athletes, Takoda Browne (aka T.K.) was nominated as Student Athlete of the Year. The San Diego Union Tribune sponsored the contest and voting took place online. Three athletes were chosen as the top picks for student athlete of the year: T.J. Leaf, Foothills Christian High School; Mickey Moniak, La Costa Canyon High School; Takoda Browne, Kearny High School.

Congratulations to Takoda Browne for winning Male Athlete of the Year.

Takoda Browne is a senior who participated in football, basketball, and track. In the fall, he was a wide receiver for football. During the winter, he was a point guard in basketball. And in the spring, he was a runner and high jumper for track.

Portland State offered him a football scholarship. Takoda Brown attends Digital Media and Design (DMD) at Kearny High.

With all these sports activities, he is a busy person and student; however, he does maintain good grades.

Gun Shooting In UCLA

Currently in today’s days, guns have become a big issue. Threatening public lives either at a store, home, or at school. On Wednesday, June 1st there was a shooting on UCLA campus. The gunman was a student who had attended UCLA. It was around 10 A.M. when the shooting occurred. Students and Staffs were running down the hallways in search for safety. All students, teachers, and staff members were under locked down. This lock down took about two hours until the police officers gave the all clear. Classes were canceled for the rest of the day.
Later it was said it was a murder-suicide involving two men inside an engineering building near the south side campus. The shooting victim was William S. Klung: an associate professor at UCLA, father of two kids, and a Little League Coach. After the shooter murdered the professor, he took his own life.

Mother’s Day on Tuesday

“Feliz día de las madres, Mamá”

Mother’s Day was on Sunday May 8, 2016 this year. For Mexicans, it’s celebrated on May 10. The first official Mexican Mother’s Day was celebrated on May 10, 1922. This celebration soon took on religious undertones. The church organizes a special mass dedicated to mothers. Early in the morning in Mexico people may play a famous song called “Las Mananitas” which is used for special day like today. Traditional Mexican foods are made, like “Tamales,” and a drink similar to hot chocolate called “Atole” is served throughout the day. Children give presents to their mom in admiration for all they have done and sacrificed.

Even though Mother’s day comes once a year, don’t forget to appreciate your mom, 💋 daily.

Kearny VS Lincoln JV Softball

Today the Kearny Komets played against the Lincoln Hornets. The game was a big deal just like all the others. However, since the softball season is coming towards an end, the JV girls are feeling the pressure that comes with maintaining an undefeated record.

From the beginning and to the end, Anya Schultz, the JV Softball pitcher, attempts to strike out the girls from the JV Lincoln Hornets. The girls playing infield, protect their bases. The girls on the outfield have their gloves on and are poised to catch any ball coming towards them.

This game was pretty tense; it was the first time the girls had to play in overtime. Games usually end around 5:30 P.M., but this game didn’t finish at 5:30, it lasted until 6:00 P.M.

Throughout the season the Kearny Komets JV Softball team was undefeated. Sadly, today the JV Softball team experienced their first lost.

Morse Tigers vs Kearny Komets

On Tuesday, April 25, 2016 Kearny’s JV Softball team played against Morse High School. However, there weren’t enough players on the JV Morse Softball Team. Therefore, the Morse Tigers ended up forfeiting the game giving the Kearny Komets the win. Although, the Tigers still played against the Kearny Komets; however, in order to still have a practice game, 4 girls from the Kearny’s softball team played for the Morse Tigers. It was a pretty fun game. It was a good way for the girls to bond and play against each other.
