Earthquake…Did you feel it?

“Did you feel it?”

“I felt it.”

“…I didn’t feel it.”

This is the typical conversation we all hear in California.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit southern California early Friday, leading people to think if there will be another one much harder. The earthquake hit around 1 a.m. according to the U.S Geological Survey (USGS). There was no reports of people being injured or any major damages. After the initial earthquake, about a dozen small aftershocks hit the area; the strongest after shock was a 3.8.

People in LA felt the shake, too.

I did not feel anything because I’m a heavy sleeper and don’t wake up that easily. Some of my friends said they did feel it, and they woke up.

‘Did you feel it?’

The Year After

The Year After

Your spectacular mind has rocked my faith

The sweetness of your excellent laughter

Haunts me like a spooky memorable wraith

I’m falling into like the hereafter

Just a chance spent with you has brought me back

Has given me courage to the sweet life

You are in my heart like an almanac

I no longer feel any strife tonight

Under the night sky you walk me straight home

You listen and talk to me every time

When I look at you, my mind starts to roam

I wonder what goes through your mind sometime

As I begin to watch you walk away

I would hope to see you another day

My heart

The keeper of my soul has my secrets
Trials and test I can for sure endure
He has stolen my warm heart without threats
My fascinating soul he can allure

When I see him, he burns my eyes like salt
He takes my breath away, like the ocean
When I’m with him my heart comes to a halt
He always messes with my emotions

His cryptic heart is deeper than the sea
When he is close by I get butterflies
He holds the key of my reality
As he drifts away, my broken heart dies

When you’re with her I’m sorely agonized
With all you did, you left me paralyzed

I heard you liked girls with big curvy hips
I wish you knew their dirty nasty tricks
Wonder if you’ve noticed my big red lips

I wish you knew their dirty nasty tricks
Bet they’re not the ones to watch the eclipse
Or have a date night to watch some chick flicks

I’ll be holding your hand through battle ships
Will they do the same all through your conflicts?
I don’t even think they know your hardships

They say they’ll stay and talk about Celtics
But would they stay in a apocalypse?
I wish you knew their dirty nasty tricks

She might afford to buy you memberships
But I’ll take care of you when you’re homesick
Even if I have to take a few slips

I wish you knew their dirty nasty tricks
They try to hide you from my big red lips
But aren’t they aware of my lunatics?
I wish they knew my dirty nasty tricks

Our Little Adventure

The day started bright and sunny with you,

We started our adventure happily.

Driving with you in the cool car, time flew,

While singing songs together crazily.

Occasionally exchanging glances,

You tell me we are going somewhere fun,

I’d begun to wonder of the chances,

Then I begin to see the setting sun.

He says, “Come here; slide over!” …Count me in.

We get out of the car and start the walk,

Heading up the hill, we’re at Cowles’ Mountain

Then our fingers begin to interlock.

I look him in the eyes, and it was bliss,

He then looked at me and gave me a kiss.

the boxes…

the boxes…

As I’m Staring into the ocean deep

My fingers holding on with a tight grip

Fighting the burdensome weight on my feet

Sharp, Jagged, ends snagging clothes causing rips

The Fragile wood was starting to give out

The ropes were scratching and pulling my feet

All I wanted to do was scream and shout

I was feeling like no one could hear me

My hands were like claws crawling rapidly

I was feeling the un-bearing pressure

I began to let go…slowly…falling

Stopping all the yelling and the lectures

I descended into the ocean deep

Now there is no more weight on my feet

Loving you

Loving you

I can love you any time of the year

From Fall, Winter, Spring, and even Summer

You don’t even know how I love you dear

Loving you is like loving no other

Your smile, embrace, and laugh make me weak

Thinking of you, makes my heart burst out my chest

You’re in my mind every day of the week

Oh, when I am with you I feel so blessed

When I am with you, I feel so complete

I vision a future between us two

No one has ever treated me so sweet

I cannot imagine life without you

I wish you knew how much you mean to me

You are like the sweet sugar to my tea

Love for In-N-Out

The waiting line will feel like forever
The colors of white and red employees
The flavors of the burgers are clever
I can go back every single week

I truly love eating at in and out
They hide it from you, the secret menu
Their fries give you a bang and make you shout
You will be astonished by the venue

Never out of sale, always sellin
One bite can take you over the blue sky
It makes you feel like you are in heaven
It makes you feel like you’re on a high

Once you have your first bite of the burger
You will be coming back for another

The rhythm and blues generate energy

The beat in the lyrics create inspiration

The light in the solar power creates synergy

It gives my body transportation

My body likes the music to move

Making it easier to socialize

My tender feet like my shoes-I can grove

My joy begins to materialize

The beat and music makes my body pop

Everytime I pop, my hip-body locks

I watch videos from a friend’s laptop

As fun as playing with legos and blocks

Because of you my friend, my body shakes

My inspiration, my sweet baby-cakes

Falling in Love

Falling in Love

You fell in love for such weird odd reasons

How did it feel when you first noticed it?

You kept it in you, so many seasons

I thought you will soon someday drop and quit

Well she felt the same way too, and I knew

She asked me if you felt the same for her

I lied to her, said you wouldn’t come through

She looked in pain, her eyes seem to blur

Next thing I knew, you two were together

My heart broke; I didn’t know what to do

Everyday felt like such darn cold weather

I wanted to do is be someone new

Many years later, you came with some news

But all I knew was, I wouldn’t refuse

My Darling Cousin

My Darling Cousin.

Although cousins, you feel like a sister

That makes me happy that we are so close

When we were kids, we sang and played twister

We’d go to malls and try on tons of clothes

Funny how we’d laugh and try it all on

We’d giggle and buy hardly anything

We’d yell at each other and say, “Come on!”

We’d talk and listen to music and sing

I will always be there caring for you

Sharing secrets with you makes us closer

When you are sad, hurt, mad, alone, or blue

I’ll remove your troubles like a dozer

Then we’ll watch movies like when we were kids

‘Til we fall asleep and close our eyelids.

2016 Graduation

Sadly, graduation is for seniors only, as they receive their diplomas leaving their younger friends…behind. But enthusiastically, our early grad seniors flock back for the grand ceremony, diplomas, and celebrations.

There are so many ceremonies throughout San Diego county this time of year—and just like the spring scattering of purple Jacaranda blossoms—the thrown-graduations caps will joyfully drift downwards announcing the end of our seniors’ youthful spring, as they commence the summer of their adult lives. Congratulations to all the seniors for their hard work during their four lengthy years of high school.

Kearny high schools graduation is on the Summer Solstice: the last day of school: June 21st. The ceremony begins at 5:00, and there is not an official set ending time.

Congrats to all the seniors who made it to the end and plan on carrying their educational journey into college.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission usually announces at least one product recall daily. Sometimes they go unnoticed by consumers; other times, buyers are injured-or worse. There are 10 notable product recalls ranging through the years 1978-2016. Here is a description of a few of those recalls.

  • Ford Pinto (1978): Fuel tank caused fires after collisions, 7 deaths and 24 injuries.
  • Fitbit (2014):10,150 injuries related to skin rashes, and Fitbit recalled 1.1 million Fitbit Force Wrist fitness trackers after some buyers had allergic reactions to the materials.
  • Hoverboards (2016): Fire risk incidents are not tallied yet, but currently, there are at least 52 Hoverboard related fires.

There are probably a thousand more recalls that have happened in the past and may happen in the future. So, remember to always be aware of all recalls because it might just so happen that you have one of the recalled products.

Senior Year Retrospect

  • Nice two pages for wrestling.
The time has come…for seniors to start thinking about the beginnings of a new journey: college, the work force, or their next…unsure or possible steps—leaving  high school, leaving childhood—and entering into the next chapter of their lives.

As with everyone else leaving this year, I have experienced many things that I wish to share.

As a senior, this year has been quite an experience. It feels weird that this year is ending so quickly. From the very beginning of the year, I felt that everything has changed so drastically since my freshman year. Every senior has matured so much since we first arrived. And as seniors, everyone has expectations that we are ready to be on our own becoming fully fledged members of society. Some of us will even vote today.

The winter season was especially difficult seeing almost all of my senior friends leaving as early grads and only a couple of us stayed behind. Difficult choices. Seeing our friends moving on. I chose to remain so I could wrestle.

This years wrestling season was challenging as expectations were raised for returning wrestlers from last year. For half the season waiting for a team captain to be chosen, I led the team by conducting our daily stretches and warm-ups. Finally, a captain was chosen by the coaches near the end of the season.

Despite the challenges, this year of wrestling was the most exhilarating as my desire grew challenging stronger opponents and never deterring from my goal to become the best. At the end of the season, though I wasn’t the best, I was satisfied. I fulfilled my high school wrestling dream. Now I have the opportunity to continue wrestling in college.

After wrestling season was over the greatest challenge awaited: The wait…for graduation. Despite my initial boredom, I slowly began to have fun as a Teacher’s Assistant for first period, the editor-in-chief of the Kearny Galaxy for second period, and a student lead for the Komet Korner in third period. These experiences helped make surviving the last semester of high school tolerable and allowed me to meet and help underclassmen with schoolwork or life in general.

This year has been a blast.

I will sorely miss everyone that I have met and all the teachers that helped me through the years. I will miss the wrestling team. Wrestling has inspired me to push myself to become stronger and has instilled in me a new confidence. But the people I will miss the most is a group of friends that are very special to me—the Geek Squad. They have stuck with me since my junior year becoming my second family.

With two weeks left of school, I look forward to what the future holds for me and my friends.

Should he have died?

On May 28th at the Cincinnati Zoo, 3-year-old Isiah Dickerson fell into the gorilla enclosure with Harambe, a 450 pound male silver-back gorilla. For about 10 minutes, Dickerson was carried and dragged through the water in the gorilla enclosure by Harambe. After a difficult decision, Harambe was shot and killed by zoo security in an effort to save the child. People are debating whether Harabme should have  been shot and killed?

Gun Shooting In UCLA

Currently in today’s days, guns have become a big issue. Threatening public lives either at a store, home, or at school. On Wednesday, June 1st there was a shooting on UCLA campus. The gunman was a student who had attended UCLA. It was around 10 A.M. when the shooting occurred. Students and Staffs were running down the hallways in search for safety. All students, teachers, and staff members were under locked down. This lock down took about two hours until the police officers gave the all clear. Classes were canceled for the rest of the day.
Later it was said it was a murder-suicide involving two men inside an engineering building near the south side campus. The shooting victim was William S. Klung: an associate professor at UCLA, father of two kids, and a Little League Coach. After the shooter murdered the professor, he took his own life.

San Diego Zoo

Last Thursday, May 26th, The School of International Business (SIB) and Digital Media Design (DMD) went to the San Diego Zoo. We left campus at about 9:40, and we arrived at the Zoo at about 10:00. At 11:45 we had to meet up again by the buses.

  • Panda panda panda panda!

My friend Ulises, Victor, Adalberto, and I grouped up, and we got lost for a while enjoying the park while exploring. When we asked a zoo-staff member where we were–and where we could find the pandas because Victor promised his little cousin he would take a picture of the pandas, the elephants, and the tigers–the lady zoo-staff guided us towards them and gave us a friendly map. Finally, We were able to fulfill Victor’s promise.

We were also entertained and excited by the fact that we saw a cheetah, elephants, tigers, monkeys, kangaroos, etc. that we did not realize what time it was. So, we started walking towards the exit at 11:30, we didn’t make it on time but we got there safe and sound.

Yesterday in school I heard a lot of students talking about the soccer game: Mexico against Chile, and that it would be taking place here in San Diego at the Qualcomm Stadium. Although I did not attend to the game, I watched it at home with my family. Even though it was just a friendly game, it was very intense, and I was hoping Mexico would win.

At the end of the first half, the score was 0-0.

But by the second half, Javier Hernandez, also known as Chicharito, scored a goal.

By the end of the game, Hernandez’s single goal gave Mexico the win over Chile.received_1092236457482408

Maned “Wolf”

One of my favorite animals is the wolf. Another one is a wolf that is not a wolf. It is called the Maned Wolf. The Maned Wolf is an ancient species; 4-million-year-old fossils have been found. It is like a fox on stilts. This animal has a confusing name; it is not a wolf, a dog, a jackal, or a fox. The Maned Wolf is a unique kind of canid. Most canids live in packs, but the Maned Wolf is solitary. It communicates with others mostly by smell, not face to face. The Maned Wolf is a very confusing creature; it looks like so many different canids, and its name is even confusing. Even though it is very confusing, the Maned Wolf is a very unique canid.

SIB and DMD went to San Diego Zoo last Thursday during SBAC testing.

I saw one of my favorite animals, the koalas. They are from Australia. The zoo has a wonderful exhibit with lots of eucalyptuses for them to eat, climb, and live in. They are gray with big black noses on their sleepy faces and chubby and fluffy bodies, and those features make them look so cute.

It wasn’t the first time I saw koalas. But every time I see them, they are always sleeping. They usually sleep between 18-22 hours a day. I looked up the reason online after I went home. The explanation is that they sleep a lot to conserve energy as their diet requires a lot of energy to digest.

The experience at the zoo was awesome. I hope we have a chance to visit the zoo again.

Panda and Elephant

Cool Elephants

Students were getting ready at 9:15 a.m to get on the buses. We arrived at the Zoo at 10:00. Teachers gathered the students once we arrived to give them instructions on where to meet. Then once we were in the park, the students were set free and left to wander and explore the park before meeting up again at 11:45 a.m to rush back for lunch at Kearny.

One of my favorite animals was the Panda. When I arrived to the Panda section there was a big line. When it was my time to see them, the Pandas were sleeping. Another animal I saw was an elephant. They were first feeding the elephants when I passed by, and then, they set him free to play with the other elephants.

Memorial Weekend In 2016

Over this Memorial Weekend, it seemed all of social media payed their respect to all those who sacrificed their lives in defending our country by posting, tweeting, and snapping about how grateful we are for those who served. The holiday is important to many for, over the centuries, many Americans have lost their lives and have lost loved ones in defense of our freedom and liberties.

Although this weekend it was pointed out how this holiday off from school and work is being used as a time for mindlessly partying, getting drunk, and have a fun time. People are ignoring the actual purpose and meaning of this honorable holiday. Some on social media were upset about how Memorial Day is marketed to sell alcohol, bonfire and party materials, even sell furniture and cars with Memorial Day sales, and to announce the “start of summer.”  It’s completely understandable that this holiday is being used as a national party day and causes some disappointment to many.

And remarkably, it was also pointed out how the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, is “celebrated” by hundreds and thousands of Americans who can not tell you the meaning of the holiday. Cinco de Mayo is similarly alike to Memorial Day, where this day is to celebrate the Battle of Puebla which was an unlikely victory and triumph against the French. It’s often confused with Mexican Independence Day even by people who celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Here, in the U.S., it looks like Cinco de Mayo is almost celebrated by everyone but Mexicans, so as Americans have adopted this holiday they have also turned it into a day to wear fake mustaches and sombreros then go out to bars and partying like there is no tomorrow. There is no real celebrating of the history of Cinco de Mayo, but that doesn’t seem to upset many, unlike how people are upset about how Memorial Day is being milked. 2 journalism
